Abitare magazine turns 60

Founded in the same year as the Salone del Mobile, the Italian magazine Abitare is celebrating its 60th anniversary with some archive material and new columns, reaffirming its role as the leading benchmark publication for design professionals and afficionados.

Abitare, like the Salone del Mobile.Milano, was set up in 1961. Francesca Taroni’s editorial marking the magazine’s anniversary touches on the six hundred editions of the collection – stories of design, architecture, art and communication that illustrate the evolution of the design practices, and of the taste, the way we inhabit our homes, and the innovations that have segued on from each other. A glance at the covers is enough to appreciate the skill with which it brings different sectors together, something the revamped magazine, redesigned by the La Trigre studio, also aims to do – by observing in an informative spirit and documenting contemporary thinking as underpinned by the lessons of the Masters. This has triggered the introduction of two new columns, Materioteca, dedicated to materials for interiors, and Smart Ideas, practical space optimisation solutions from young international designers. Design remains central, through narratives with still lifes, fine art photos and technical product details accompanied by interviews and reportages, in a formula that combines detailed analysis, aesthetic quality and layout. Abitare, a multimedia magazine with print at its heart, aims to be a point of reference for designers and an inspiration for devotees. A challenge that only its team of professionals and an international network of contributors can hope to achieve.
